Preparing for a hiking trip should energize you, not stress you out. Too many hikers get bogged down in nitpicking gear instead of focusing on the essentials. After all, more gear means more weight, and extra weight slows you down. So what really makes a difference on the trail? We’ll go over the basics, with a surprising twist near the end that could change how you pack.

The key to dialing in your gear is planning for where and how you’re hiking. I’m talking about things like weather, length of trip and terrain. But before we get into specifics, check out this got too silly goose hats page if you want hats that are fun but still work for real conditions (because who said all your kit has to be battle-tested dull gray?). Once you’ve picked a great place for a hike, let’s figure out what else you actually need.

Pick the Pack That Works for You

A pack works or it doesn’t. It’s that simple. A bad pack shifts weight awkwardly or snags every branch twitching in the breeze. The best one fits snugly while sitting right on your hips whatever sidehill adventures lie ahead. If your pack feels like an alien lifeform, swap it out: even moderate discomfort turns into real pain quickly.

For day trips under 25 pounds, look at packs between 20-30L with hip belts that wrap snugly around your waist without digging in after two miles up steep switchbacks from hell—yes those trails exist somewhere near where you live.

The pricier packs have elastic mesh pockets on hips too which holds water bottles without sloshing noises driving everyone insane—small wins!

Footwear Choices Boil Down to One Decision

Sturdy sneakers or high-cut boots? This isn’t technically a “both” scenario although people trying to sell boots will insist otherwise as part of normal advertising speech patterns (“just-in-case terrain” my ass). Good shoes sit somewhere between shoes and sneakers: grippy rubber soles plus breathable fabric coverings means they’ll keep feet happy regardless of whether temperatures crawl below freezing or luge uphill trail angles threaten sanity itself at certain points along any hike involving elevation change.

Bring spare socks though always because feet bred swear word production facilities when blisters fire up mid-hike no matter how lovingly prepared everything else might have been otherwise incurable
