Tony bridge

There I found my whakapapa. I found that I am Te Rarawa, that my hapu is Whanopani, and my whānau is Paiha. I am a Boyce from Rangi Point, descended from the chief, Paepae. I learned the name of my original ancestor, Tiirairaka (local dialect for fantail), who arrived with Kupe on Matawahorua. Ko Matawhorua te waka.

And my best kind of working day? Any day that I’m doing what I love is the best kind of working day. Whether I’m strapped into a helicopter, leaning perilously out the door to snap the beautiful Ngāi Tahu tribal area (with Richie McCaw at the helm I might add!) or photographing people on the streets and capturing the essence of a place with my camera.

I was born in Ranfurly, Central Otago. My mother is Pākehā, from Invercargill. My father however, was born in the Hokianga, as were his parents. So, one from the Deep South, and one from the Far North.

Held in great affection by many lay people who valued his humanity, kindliness and understanding, he did not go out of his way to endear himself to his fellow clergy, however. Arriving late at a crowded staff meeting in the bishop’s study he announce in loud tones: “My God, the stench of stale Christians.” Radical in many of his theological and moral views, not least on the subject of sex and marriage, he was deeply traditional in ways of worship and gave no encouragement to fashionable trendiness. Advocates of charismatic renewal his dismissed as “those silly buggers with guitars”. He was a brilliant maverick, and there were occasions when his sermons were received with a measure of consternation; he was at his most outrageous when confronted with a cathedral full of Surrey ladies in their best hats.

Although in many ways unconventional, Tony Bridge was in no sense a “trendy” clergyman; and he fiercely denounced many developments in the Church of England. He once accused it of transforming itself into :

Ston

As one of the oldest oyster-farming regions in the world, Ston is home to several oyster farms that produce some of the finest oysters in Croatia. Visitors can tour some of these farms and learn about the history and process of oyster farming. Several restaurants in Ston and Mali Ston serve fresh oysters.

The original old town was demolished in the earthquake of 1252. With the arrival of the Republic, a new city was built on today’s location. When renovations were made at the church of St. Michael at the top of the hill, fragments of Roman decorative plaster, Roman tombstones and antique ceramics were found, confirming this assumption. According to some sources, Ston experienced a destructive civil war in 1250, and in these conflicts the city suffered a great deal of destruction.

Mali Ston Bay is where you will find the oyster beds that produce what are often said to be the most delicious oysters in the world! (If you can’t make it down to this part of the Peljesac Peninsula, fear not! You can also find these oysters at many other restaurants in Dubrovnik and the Southern Dalmatian region.)

The weather is at its best during the peak summer months – typically June, July and August – but you will have to expect higher priced accomodation and limited availability. Thankfully, the shoulder season on the Dubrovnik Riviera can still provide a bit of sun, with the temperatures remaining reasonably high until late October. From April to late may or mid-Septemeber to late-October, you will find fewer tourists, cheaper hotel rates and and all bars, restaurants, and services are still operating.

There aren’t many hotels in this part of the Peljesac Peninsula, although there is the Hotel Ostrea in Ston. Private accommodation – apartments and rooms – to rent are certainly available. Take a look at where to stay on the search map below:

In 533, at Salona, a diocese of Sarsenterum was established for the Zachlumia (Hum) area, which belonged to the church in Ston (Pardui). Later Sarsenterum was destroyed, most likely at the time of the Avars’ campaign. Since Ston was not reached by the Avars, it was spared and became the seat of the local župa.
